El Merriekh FC Juba goalkeeper J. Malish has hailed newly promoted Al Huriya FC as a "tough side" following his team’s hard-fought 1-0 victory in Matchday 2 of the Konyo Konyo League, played on Tuesday at the Buluk Training Ground in Juba.
Despite walking away with a clean sheet and being named Most Valuable Player (MVP) by the Juba Joint Fans, Malish was quick to acknowledge the strength of their opponents.
“The game was not easy. Al Huriya is a tough side — they have good players and quality. But we managed to contain the game without rushing. Our team is small in comparison, but we stayed disciplined. Honestly, they played better than us, but we handled the pressure,” Malish told journalists after the match.
The goalkeeper's impressive performance between the posts was vital in securing El Merriekh’s first win of the season, temporarily placing them at the top of the Konyo Konyo League table with 4 points.
Malish, who is nearing the end of his contract with the club, said the desire to leave a lasting legacy is driving his current form.
“I want to keep more clean sheets and be the best goalkeeper in the league. I have only three months left before my contract ends in December. I need to work even harder,” he added.
Despite El Merriekh’s narrow win, Al Huriya FC's strong showing suggests they are ready to compete at this level, even in their debut season in the Juba Football Association First Division League.
