Al Hilal FC Thrash El Merriekh FC 4-1 in Sky Derby Upset

Juba, South Sudan- 22nd March 2026 - Al Hilal FC delivered a stunning performance to dismantle rivals El Merriekh FC 4-1 in the much-anticipated “Sky Derby” during Week 15 of the Juba Football Association 1st Division League—popularly known as the Konyokonyo League—at the Bulluk Playground in Juba on Sunday afternoon.

Al Hilal FC dominated proceedings with an emphatic display, securing a crucial victory that lifts them to 10th place on the standings with 20 points. The result marks a significant boost in their campaign, as they climb from third-from-bottom to now sit six places above the relegation zone.

For El Merriekh FC, it was a disappointing outing as they failed to match their rivals’ intensity, despite going into the clash in a stronger league position.

 They now temporarily sit 8th with 30 points, missing a chance to strengthen their standing in the tightly contested league.

The defeat marks a second consecutive loss for El Merriekh FC, having earlier in the week suffered a dramatic 4-3 defeat to Viva Stars in one of the most remarkable comebacks in the Konyokonyo League this season. In that match, Viva Stars overturned a 3-1 deficit to claim a stunning victory, further compounding El Merriekh’s recent struggles.

The derby result adds another twist to the Konyokonyo League season, underlining the unpredictability and competitiveness of the Juba First Division League.

Bright Stars Begin Preparations for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

Merriekh SC Bentiu Set for Maiden CECAFA Kagame Cup Appearance

By: Emmanuel Patrick Laku - Juba, South Sudan – El Merriekh SC Bentiu will make their first-ever appearance in the CECAFA Kagame Cup 2025, scheduled for September 2–15 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with the draw set for August 26th. The South Sudan Premier League club was nominated by the South Sudan Football Federation (SSFF) after Kator FC turned down an invitation to participate in the tournament.  This development followed CAF’s decision to reject Kator from representing the country in the CAF Confederation Cup. El Merriekh’s involvement in the Kagame Cup is seen as a crucial preparation for their upcoming campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup, where they will represent South Sudan at continental level.  The tournament will give the Bentiu-based side exposure to regional competition and help them build the experience needed for the challenges ahead.
