Juba, South Sudan - 16th April 2026 - Mathematically, Citizen FC have been relegated from the Juba Football Association 1st Division League following a 3-0 defeat to El Merriekh FC in a postponed Week 27 fixture at Bulluk Playground in Juba on Thursday.

The result leaves Citizen FC stranded on 13 points, with only two matches remaining, making it impossible to catch safety. 

Both Zalzal FC and Amarat United FC sit on 20 points each, sealing Citizen’s fate in the relegation battle.

It has been a difficult campaign for Citizen FC, who managed just 2 wins from 26 matches, alongside 7 draws and 16 defeats.

Their struggles have been clear at both ends of the pitch—scoring only 18 goals, while conceding 53, one of the weakest defensive records in the league.

With survival no longer possible, Citizen FC become the first confirmed relegated side of the season as the league approaches its final stages.

The squad announcement was made public on Wednesday, August 20, through the official Facebook page of the South Sudan Football Federation (SSFF). The selected players are set to begin training next week in preparation for a critical double-header against DR Congo and Mauritania. South Sudan former interim head coach Cyprian Ashu believes the Bright Stars can challenge for qualification in Group B of the TotalEnergies AFCON 2027 qualifiers despite being drawn against Egypt, Angola and Malawi. Ashu, who was appointed as interim coach on March 12, 2026, in his second spell with the Bright Stars, successfully guided South Sudan past Djibouti in the preliminary round to secure a place in the group stages.
